Harald Haas is Professor of Engineering at the University of Cambridge, Visiting Professor at the School of Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, and the inventor, founder, and driving force behind LiFi technology—an innovation poised to replace the WiFi we know today. Like WiFi, LiFi operates wirelessly, but instead of using radio waves, it transmits data via light waves. A proud Franconian, Harald Haas studied in Nuremberg (Ohm University of Applied Sciences) and began his professional journey at our long-standing partner, Siemens. His enduring academic passion lies in the intersection of optics and informatics. After completing his PhD at the University of Edinburgh, he embarked on a distinguished research career, with academic appointments in Bremen, Edinburgh, and now Cambridge.

His achievements are remarkable: over 650 publications in conferences and scientific journals, more than 50,000 citations (h-index: 108), and 45 patents—testaments to the groundbreaking nature of his research.

As a recipient of the prestigious Humboldt Research Award, Harald Haas joined our Chair of Digital Communications, where he became acquainted with and deeply appreciative of our innovation ecosystem. We are confident that he will continue to promote the reputation of our university around the globe and further strengthen the bond between Cambridge and Erlangen.
